Athens is one of the most beautiful and historic cities in the world. From the delicious food to gorgeous sites, here is the perfect 2-day Athens itinerary to make sure that you get the most out of your visit.

Day 1 – Arrive, Eat, Explore, Learn

After arriving in Athens, we took the metro from the airport to Syntagma to check in to our Airbnb. The location of this Airbnb was EVERYTHING – it was close enough to the big tourist sites that we could easily walk where we wanted to go, but not too close that we were always in the hustle and bustle of tourists.

After dropping off our luggage we set out to explore the area. We walked around Syntagma Square, found our way to Monastiriki Square, and then wound our way back towards the Acropolis where we grabbed a delicious first meal. Granted, this was a restaurant catered towards tourists, but we still could not believe the quality of the food – significantly better than tourist restaurants in other cities.

My favorite part of traveling is meeting and learning from others. So, for our first day we booked an Airbnb sculpture class experience at a local pottery shop. We did not know what to expect but the class ended up being the highlight of our trip! The shop was located just a few blocks from the Acropolis and the class was hosted by the shop owner - Evdokia. Upon arrival, she welcomed us and explained that we would have the opportunity to each create two sculptures. As we spent the next 2+ hours learning how to sculpt, Evdokia shared with us her love of Athens and Greek history. She also expressed interest in our lives and backgrounds. We left feeling like we had made a new friend. Check out this experience here: https://www.airbnb.com/experiences/1160841

Day 2 – Ancient Sites

Of all this sites in Athens, the Acropolis is probably the most famous. Situated atop a large hill in the middle of the city, nothing compares the grandeur of this incredible site.

After a delicious breakfast at the base of the Acropolis, we arrived at the Acropolis Museum (at the base of the hill) just in time for opening. We were one of the first groups into the museum. I recommend going to the museum before the Acropolis as it provides good background information and makes your visit to the Acropolis much more meaningful.

After we explored the museum, we grabbed lunch and then we set off to the Acropolis. In addition to the Parthenon that sits atop of the hill, the Acropolis also includes many other temples and sites along the base and top of the hill. In addition to the Acropolis, we also explored other nearby sits such as the Ancient Agora of Athens.

Tip: The top of the Acropolis is very windy so don’t wear a dress like it did!

When we were ready for a break, we enjoyed delicious treats at the CUTEST cafe I have ever seen: Little Kook (Karaiskaki 17, Athina 105 54, Greece).

All of this is a lot to see in one day. If you don’t like archaeology and/or don’t want to spend a whole day looking at ruins, then you may want to split all of these sites into a couple of days. But if you’re like us – and love the history and love the walking, then get ready for an awesome day!
