Nestled in the heart of the Aegean Sea, Mykonos is a Greek island paradise that offers a rich blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. From ancient ruins to charming windmills to crystal-clear waters teeming with marine life, Mykonos has something for everyone. This easy Mykonos one day travel guide is perfect for those on a quick cruise stop!
Mykonos Archaeological Museum Start your day with a visit to the Mykonos Archaeological Museum, located in the heart of Mykonos Town. The museum features a collection of ancient artifacts dating back to the Neolithic period, including pottery, jewelry, and sculptures.
One of the most notable pieces in the museum's collection is the statue of the god Dionysus, which dates back to the 2nd century BC. The museum also has a fascinating exhibit on the history of Mykonos and the Cyclades islands, giving visitors a deeper understanding of the island's rich cultural heritage.
Windmills of Kato Mili After visiting the museum, take a short walk to the Windmills of Kato Mili, one of Mykonos' most iconic landmarks. The windmills, which date back to the 16th century, were once used to grind wheat and other grains, and were an essential part of the island's economy. Today, the windmills offer a stunning view of the island and the Aegean Sea, and are a popular spot for tourists to take photos. The windmills are especially beautiful at sunset, when the golden light of the sun bathes the landscape in a warm glow. Snorkeling in Agios Ioannis Bay
End your day with an unforgettable snorkeling experience in Agios Ioannis Bay, located on the south coast of Mykonos. The bay is home to a wide variety of marine life, including colorful fish, sea turtles, and even dolphins.
There are several companies that offer snorkeling tours in the area, providing all the necessary equipment and expert guidance. Snorkelers will have the opportunity to explore the underwater world of Mykonos, with its vibrant coral reefs, clear waters, and exotic fish.
Since we did not have enough time for a full snorkel tour, we picked up some cheap snorkel equipment from a convenience store for about 12 euros. The water was a bit chilly in early June, but it was crystal clear! Pro tip – make sure to wear some kind of water shoe or sports sandals. There are a LOT of sea urchins along the sea floor.
What to Wear
Be ready for a fun day of walking and chilling at the beach. I opted for a comfortable sun dress and my favorite summer walking shoes - Tevas. I carried a tote bag with a small towel and my swimsuit. Changing was pretty easy, I just found a public restroom near the beach to put on my swimsuit. Just be sure to dress appropriately for all of the activities that you plan on doing. If you want to enter any of the beautiful churches or religious sites on the island, be prepared to dress respectfully as well.
