Hong Kong is one of my favorite cities! It offers a dazzling array of experiences for travelers. From towering skyscrapers to serene temples, bustling markets, and scenic hikes, this vibrant city has something for everyone. In this post, we will take you on a journey through some of our favorite attractions and things to do in Hong Kong, ensuring that you make the most of your visit.
Victoria Peak
Start your Hong Kong adventure with a breathtaking view of the city from Victoria Peak. You can reach the summit by taking the iconic Peak Tram. Once at the top, enjoy the panoramic vistas of the Hong Kong skyline, Victoria Harbour, and the surrounding islands. Be sure to visit at night for stunning views of the lights.
Shopping in Mong Kok
If you're a shopaholic, head to Mong Kok in Kowloon. Known for its vibrant street markets and shopping malls, you'll find a variety of items, from fashion and electronics to quirky knick-knacks. The Ladies' Market and the Temple Street Night Market are particularly famous for their bustling atmosphere and great deals. Enjoy a treasure trove of street food stalls, trinkets, and local crafts.
Museums in Tsim Sha Tsui
Tsim Sha Tsui, on the southern tip of Kowloon, boasts a collection of world-class museums. The Hong Kong Space Museum, Hong Kong Science Museum, and the Hong Kong Museum of History are just a few of the intriguing options for those interested in science, history, and culture.
Big Buddha on Lantau Island
For a tranquil escape from the urban bustle, make your way to Lantau Island to see the Tian Tan Buddha, commonly known as Big Buddha. This magnificent 112-foot bronze statue is a symbol of spirituality and serenity. Climb the 268 steps to the platform and enjoy the panoramic views of the lush green surroundings. There are a few options for reaching Big Buddha from the nearest MTR (metro) station including bus, hiking, and cable car. The cable car is the most expensive option but definitely the most scenic! You can purchase tickets here.
Shopping in Kwai Fong
If you're still craving some retail therapy, visit Kwai Fong in the New Territories. This less touristy area offers a range of shopping options, from street markets to modern malls. You'll discover unique finds and a taste of local shopping culture.
Hiking Lion Rock
Lion Rock is a challenging but rewarding hiking trail. Located in Kowloon, this hike offers spectacular views of the city's skyline, surrounding islands, and Victoria Harbour. It's a great way to appreciate Hong Kong's natural beauty. The hike is steep but very well maintained.
Exploring Sai Kung
Sai Kung is a serene coastal town located in the New Territories. Known for its clear waters, hiking trails, and seafood restaurants, it's a fantastic place to unwind and escape the city's hustle and bustle. Explore the Sai Kung Geopark or take a boat tour to experience the area's unique natural beauty.
Visiting 10,000 Buddhas Temple
The Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery, located in Sha Tin, is a hidden gem. The temple is adorned with thousands of golden statues of Buddha, making for a serene and awe-inspiring experience. The uphill walk to reach the temple is lined with statues and lush greenery, adding to the charm of the visit.
Riding the Tram (Ding Ding)
Experience the charm of Hong Kong Island's tramway system, affectionately called the "Ding Ding." These historic double-decker trams have been an iconic part of the city's landscape for over a century. Hop on and off as you please to explore different neighborhoods, all while taking in the sights and sounds of the city.
Walking Along the Harborfront
The Victoria Harbour waterfront is a must-visit destination. Stroll along the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade and take in the stunning views of Hong Kong Island's skyline. The Symphony of Lights, a nightly light and sound show, adds an extra touch of magic to the experience.
Trying Street Food
No visit to Hong Kong would be complete without indulging in its delicious street food. From steaming dim sum to succulent roast meats and tantalizing egg waffles, the city's street food scene offers a diverse array of culinary delights. Don't miss trying some local favorites like egg tarts, stinky tofu, and siu mai. My favorites are steamed buns, Cheung fan (rice noodle rolls served with peanut and plum sauce), and egg waffles!
Weather and Packing
One of the best parts about visiting Hong Kong is the amazing weather. Visiting during the summer can be very hot and humid, so I recommend a fall, winter, or spring trip. And if you love Christmas, Hong Kong is famous for their amazing Christmas lights displays. It's a very festive city in which to enjoy the holidays.
Make sure to pack for the weather. If visiting in the summer be prepared for very hot weather. You may also encounter heavy rains, so bring an umbrella (or buy one there) and pack shoes that you can get wet on rainy days. In the fall and winter temperatures cool to a comfortable 60-70 degrees. Bring a jacket for windy days or days hiking in the mountains, but in general this is a very fun and comfortable time to visit.
Hong Kong is a captivating city that seamlessly blends tradition and modernity. Whether you're drawn to the towering skyscrapers, tranquil temples, bustling markets, or scenic hiking trails, there's something for everyone in this vibrant metropolis. So, pack your bags and embark on an unforgettable journey to explore the rich tapestry of Hong Kong's culture and landscapes.
