Where to Find the Best Views in Mallorca

Mallorca, the largest of the Balearic Islands, is a Mediterranean paradise known for its stunning landscapes, crystal-clear waters, and rich cultural heritage. If you're looking for the best views on the island, look no further. In this post, we'll explore two remarkable sites that offer some of the most breathtaking views in Mallorca: the Cathedral de Mallorca and Bellver Castle.

Cathedral de Mallorca

Location: The Cathedral de Mallorca, also known as La Seu, is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture located in the heart of Palma, the island's capital. The cathedral stands proudly at the end of the historic Old Town, surrounded by the city's narrow streets and vibrant atmosphere.

From Palma, the cathedral is easily accessible on foot, as it's situated right in the city center. If you're coming from other parts of the island, you can take a bus or drive to Palma. Parking can be found in nearby areas, but it's recommended to use public transportation or walk to avoid parking difficulties.

What to Expect: The Cathedral de Mallorca is a true work of art. With its soaring spires, intricate stained glass windows, and stunning interior, it's a must-visit for anyone visiting Palma de Mallorca. The cathedral is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and boasts a rich cultural history that dates back to the 13th century. Construction began in 1229 but was not completed until 1601.

The Cathedral de Mallorca was built on the site of a former mosque and represents the transition from Moorish to Christian rule. Its construction began in the 13th century and continued for centuries, resulting in a magnificent blend of architectural styles. The cathedral also houses a museum where you can learn more about its history and the island's religious and artistic heritage.

Once inside, you'll be awestruck by the sheer grandeur of the place. Be sure to take a moment to admire the rose window and the ornate chapel, which are among the highlights. We highly recommend taking the audio tour as it offers wonderful background information and fun historical facts during your visit.

When purchasing your tickets, be sure to add-on tickets to the rooftop. This additional experience is well worth the added cost. After exploring the interior, make your way to the cathedral's rooftop terrace, where you'll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Palma, the Mediterranean Sea, and the surrounding landscapes. The cathedral is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the island, so I recommend booking tickets in advance and visiting at an earlier time slot. Purchase tickets here.

Bellver Castle

Castel de Bellver

Location: Bellver Castle, or Castell de Bellver, is perched atop a hill, approximately 3 kilometers west of Palma. The castle's circular design and elevated position make it an ideal location for panoramic views. To reach Bellver Castle, you can take a short drive, taxi, or even a pleasant walk from Palma. The castle is located in a lush forested area, and there is ample parking available on-site.

What to Expect: Bellver Castle is a unique fortress with a circular design, one of the few in Europe. Inside, you'll find a courtyard, a museum, and well-preserved rooms that offer insights into the castle's history. The real highlight, however, is the spectacular 360-degree view from the castle's rooftop. You'll be able to see Palma, the coastline, and the Tramuntana mountains, all in one sweeping vista.

The history of Bellver Castle dates back to the 14th century when it was built during the reign of King James II. It served various purposes throughout the centuries, including as a royal residence and a military prison. Today, it stands as a testament to Mallorca's history and offers visitors a chance to explore its rich past.

Tickets can be purchased online or in person. We found that this site is much less crowded, perhaps due to being located a bit outside of the city center, so it was easy for us to purchased tickets there.
